The firm Featherstonhaugh, Wiley & Clyne, whose clients include Saratoga Casino Holdings and the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, gave Ms. Hochul $25,000 about a month after she took office and then another $25,000 a few weeks into her first session.

Off Track Betting in New York State has been racing into a crisis called shrinking revenue. Some people have spitballed a solution: Don’t close on holidays.
New York State Racing Law bars racing on Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday, and the state has ruled OTBs can’t handle action on those days, even though they could easily broadcast races from out of state.
“You should be able to bet whenever you want,” said Jackson Leeds, a Nassau OTB employee who makes an occasional bet. He added some irrefutable logic: “How is the business going to make money if you’re not open to take people’s bets?”
Elias Tsekerides, president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, said OTB is open on Greek Orthodox Easter and Palm Sunday.
“I don’t want discrimination,” Tsekerides said. “They close for the Catholics, but open for the Greek Orthodox? It’s either open for all or not open.”
OTB officials have said they lose millions by closing on Palm Sunday alone, with tracks such as Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Turf Paradise and Hawthorne running.
One option: OTBs could just stay open and face the consequences. New York City OTB did just that back in 2003. The handle was about $1.5 million – and OTB was fined $5,000.

Russian Lawmaker Urges Putin to Withdraw From Ukraine

A lawmaker in Russia’s Far East called on President Vladimir Putin to withdraw troops from Ukraine, in a rare public expression of dissent.
“We demand the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. We demand an end to military action,” Communist Party member Leonid Vasyukevich said Friday as he addressed a session of the legislative assembly in Russia’s Primorsky region.
Video footage posted on local media shows Mr. Vasyukevich as he stands up and starts reading his address to Mr. Putin, while other voices are heard urging Mr. Vasyukevich to end his speech.
“We understand that if our country doesn’t stop the military operation, there will be more orphans in our country. Young people who could be of great benefit to our country are dying or becoming disabled during this military operation,” Mr. Vasyukevich said, according to the video footage.
As Russian setbacks on the battlefield have mounted, critical voices have grown louder. A Russian diplomat declared his resignation this week over the war, saying he was “ashamed of his country.”
In a recent television appearance, retired Col. Mikhail Khodaryonok cautioned viewers that “the situation will clearly get worse for us” in Ukraine as Western countries step up arms shipments and financial support for Kyiv.
The legislative assembly of Russia’s Primorsky region said Friday that Mr. Vasyukevich’s address amounted to a “political provocation.”
Mr. Vasyukevich read out names of other lawmakers who he said backed his statement as he concluded his remarks. The legislative assembly quoted some lawmakers as saying they hadn’t signed the statement.
