Jewish groups want Ilhan Omar dropped from Foreign Affairs Committee

WASHINGTON — Eleven Jewish groups, including the National Council for Young Israel, have called on House leadership to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee for posting “ugly, anti-Semitic attacks on Jews and their organizations.”
Leaders of the Jewish organizations sent a letter Monday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Eliot Engel (D-Bronx), who chairs the powerful House committee.
“In light of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s recent anti-Semitic tweets, statements, and address before Islamic Relief USA on Saturday, February 23rd, we, the undersigned organizations, request that you immediately remove her as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee,” the groups wrote.
Also Monday, Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, wrote Pelosiasking for a House resolution to reject Omar’s anti-Semitic statements.
A senior Democratic aide told The Post that the House will take up a resolution Wednesday condemning anti-Semitism and the ADL was aware of the action before sending the letter.
The text of the resolution is still being drafted by staffs from the offices of Pelosi, Engel and Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-Manhattan), Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.).
Omar has said that pro-Israel members of Congress have dual loyalties.
“I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee,” the Minnesota congresswoman tweeted Sunday.
Greenblatt said accusing American Jews of having dual loyalties has “long been a vile anti-Semitic slur.”
Omar’s previous comments have been rebuked by Pelosi, Engel and other top-ranking House leaders. Her office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Omar and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib became the first Muslim women sworn into Congress in January.
