An Albany lawmaker has learned the hard way not to mess with fellow Democrat Simcha Felder — at least while he’s the swing vote giving Republicans control of the state Senate.
Manhattan state Sen. Marisol Alcantara got the message loud and clear after she blasted Felder last month for pushing to exclude yeshivas from academic standards required of other schools.
Three weeks later, she suddenly retracted her criticism and announced yeshivas were doing a “fantastic” job in educating their students.

One Democratic source said there’s no question pressure was applied to Alcantara as part of a fence-mending gesture.
His vote is all that is keeping the GOP in charge and depriving the Democrats of taking over the 63-member chamber.
“The yeshiva-friendly tour was about bringing Simcha into the fold,” said the insider.
Another source said, “If the Senate Democrats can show they are supportive of issues important to the ultra-orthodox Jewish community, Simcha will be more inclined to rejoin the Democrats sooner rather than later.”
Democratic officials insist that Alcanatra changed positions after responding to an invitation by a Jewish group, Agudath Israel, to tour a yeshiva in Felder’s district.
Alcantara, who represents Washington Heights, first took aim at Felder during an April 5 news conference with advocates pushing for yeshiva reforms.
“This is the one single issue that kept us hostage until 2 o’clock in the morning on Good Friday. One single person holding the entire budget of the state of New York hostage,” Alcantara said at the time.
“I am an immigrant. I went to Catholic school all my life and the one thing I learned in Catholic school is about slavery, the Holocaust, the conquest and the massacre of the indigenous people in the Americas. … How can we live next door to another community and because these children don’t have an opportunity to study and learn about the people who surround them, how can you expect us as a state to get along?”
But the end of April, she took it all back.
She toured the Chasan Sofer yeshiva in Borough Park and apologized for joining the”anti-yeshiva protest,” the Jewish publication Hamodia reported.
During the visit, Alcantara was joined by Democratic Sen. Diane Savino (SI- Brooklyn).
