NEW ROCHELLE - A Columbus Elementary School student is being treated for tuberculosis, the school district said Thursday evening.
"The child is being treated, is not at school and is expected to make a full recovery," Superintendent Brian Osborne said in a statement.
Osborne said the Westchester County Department of Health told school officials that the risk of exposure is low, but the district is still working with health department officials to identify students and staff who were potentially exposed and who should be evaluated and tested.
Staff members and parents or guardians of children identified as potentially exposed will be notified in a letter by Friday and later notified of free testing that will be scheduled.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that usually affects the lungs, according to the health department.
The disease is typically spread through the air when an untreated patient coughs, sneezes, laughs or sings and another person is in close contact, according to the health department.
Symptoms include a low-grade fever, night sweats, weakness or tiredness, and weight loss. There also may be a cough, chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing up blood.
