Rep. Pete King blasted Democrats for rejecting President Trump’s proposal to end the month-long partial government shutdown, saying extreme progressive elements of their party see the deal as “compromising with the devil.”
“The fear is, among the Democratic leadership, if they make any agreement with President Trump it’s like compromising with the devil,” the New York Republican told 970 AM host John Catsimatidis on his radio show “The Cats Roundtable” on Sunday.
“The Democratic Party in the Senate and also in the House with Nancy Pelosi is basically under the control and certainly heavily influenced by its progressive left wing,” King continued. “And that wing of the party has put Nancy Pelosi in the position where they feel they can’t do any kind of compromise. Any compromise with President Trump is going to look like a surrender.”
Pelosi called a “non-starter” a deal Trump announced Saturday at the White House that would trade protections for “Dreamers” – young people brought to the US illegally by their parents – for $5.7 billion he wants for a border wall.
The impasse has led to a 30-day partial government shutdown.
But King said progressive Democrats won’t allow leadership to negotiate.
While urging Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to stand up to progressives, he also called on Trump to confront the far-right wing of the Republican Party who dismissed the president’s deal for “Dreamers” as asylum.
“I think the president should stand up to the Freedom Caucus on the right,” King said.
“They should not let the wings of the parties control our policies and control the country. You’re talking about a small wing on both sides, which is unfortunately dominating the 70 to 80 percent of the people in the middle,” he said.
