Members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters this week elected Sean O’Brien as the union’s new general president by a wide margin, a victory that will formally bring an end to the reign of James P. Hoffa.

Mr. O’Brien, who is currently an international vice president for the east region, and the rest of his 23-person slate will take over in March 2022. Mr. Hoffa, who had previously been general president of the Teamsters since 1999, didn’t run for re-election. The Teamsters, which is one of the country’s biggest unions, has nearly 1.4 million members ranging from airline workers to warehouse staff.

Mr. O’Brien, 49 years old, has been critical of Mr. Hoffa, whose father ran the union from 1957 to 1971. Mr. O’Brien claims the union under Mr. Hoffa’s leadership was led by complacency and aspires for it to be more aggressive.

“We’ve got to organize unorganized workers,” he said in a recent interview. “Basically we have to rebuild this whole organization and take it to a level that it hasn’t seen in decades because it’s been led by complacency.”

The organization’s election for new leadership comes at a notable time in organized labor, when employees of major corporations have gone on strike and public support for unions is at its highest in decades. Employers have also been grappling with a labor shortage, which in some ways has shifted power into workers’ hands.
