The sun was just sliding behind Bald Peak, a stubby mountain overlooking the Oregon village of Laurelwood, on that summery afternoon in 1977 when Bonnie Sleeper pulled up to her friend Margo's house with an armload of flowers. She knew something was wrong even before she reached the front step. It was just a feeling.

Finding the door locked, but hearing rock and roll pounding from a radio somewhere inside the house, she went around back. The door there pushed open easily.
