Dear nassau otb bettors,

Here in New York, we’re fortunate to have the most dedicated workforce in the country. I know because I experience it firsthand every day. Whether it’s keeping our roads safe, ensuring the trains run on time, educating our children, or responding to emergencies, New York working men and women are always up to the task.

That’s why it's fitting that the roots of Labor Day can be traced back to the Empire State. The first Labor Day Parade in U.S. history was held in New York City on September 5, 1882. Just a few years later, the first measure to create a state-recognized holiday was introduced in New York.

Today, New York remains a leader in protecting workers’ rights. At last year’s Labor Day Parade, we launched the Mario Cuomo Campaign for Economic Justice, and this year, I want to celebrate the many significant milestones we achieved since 2015.

We started the Task Force to Combat Worker Exploitation, which has already helped secure nearly $4 million in back wages and damages for more than 7,500 workers in the year since its inception. We also enacted unprecedented protections for nail salon workers, who were especially vulnerable to wage theft and unsafe working conditions.

Join our fight to root out worker exploitation and build a safer workplace for all.

After raising wages for fast food workers and airport workers last year, we took up the fight for $15 during this legislative session and successfully enacted a statewide minimum wage of $15. This is a monumental step for economic justice and more than 2.3 million New Yorkers will see their wage rise because of our hard work together.

To help New Yorkers facing unexpected circumstances with the health of a loved one or the arrival of a new child, we passed the strongest and most comprehensive paid family leave policy in the nation with up to 12 weeks for all employees. Now, no New Yorker will have to be forced to choose between their paycheck and caring for a loved one.

This Labor Day, I urge everyone to take a moment to thank the millions of hardworking New Yorkers who make our state great, and celebrate the progress we have made towards economic justice for all.

From my family to yours, thank you. Wishing you a Happy Labor Day.

Sincerely,

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
