Stop scratching on holidays
Published: June 1, 2012

Off Track Betting in New York State has been racing into a crisis called shrinking revenue. Some people have spitballed a solution: Don’t close on holidays.
New York State Racing Law bars racing on Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday, and the state has ruled OTBs can’t handle action on those days, even though they could easily broadcast races from out of state.
“You should be able to bet whenever you want,” said Jackson Leeds, a Nassau OTB employee who makes an occasional bet. He added some irrefutable logic: “How is the business going to make money if you’re not open to take people’s bets?”
Elias Tsekerides, president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, said OTB is open on Greek Orthodox Easter and Palm Sunday.
“I don’t want discrimination,” Tsekerides said. “They close for the Catholics, but open for the Greek Orthodox? It’s either open for all or not open.”
OTB officials have said they lose millions by closing on Palm Sunday alone, with tracks such as Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Turf Paradise and Hawthorne running.
One option: OTBs could just stay open and face the consequences. New York City OTB did just that back in 2003. The handle was about $1.5 million – and OTB was fined $5,000.
Easy money.

Senator Brooks Rallies With LIRR Commuters
It is absolutely absurd that week after week, the more than 300,000 daily MTA LIRR commuters are left stranded due to mismanagement and chaos at Penn Station. Long Islanders deserve better. That's why I stood with LIRR commuters, Senator Todd Kaminsky, Legislator Laura Curran, Michaelle Solages, LB City Manager Jack Schnirman, Assemblyman Dave McDonough and Assemblyman Brian Curran to stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Commuters deserve reliable service and to be treated with respect and dignity. To all those who attended the rally, thank you for making your voices heard.

Senator Brooks Calls for Guaranteeing Cancer Coverage of Volunteer Firefighters
One measure of the effectiveness of a fire service is response time. Volunteer firefighters are always there when we need them -- without question or hesitation.
In this instance, Albany's response time in guaranteeing presumptive cancer coverage for volunteer firefighters is UNACCEPTABLE. It's time to make this critical bill law to protect these brave men and women and their families.

Brooks Sponsors Job & Career Fair In Freeport
On Thursday, May 11 I was enthused to sponsor a Job & Career Fair at the Freeport Recreation Center  where more than 50 employers connected with over 150 job seekers
We all know how hard it can be to find a job.  Nevertheless, we were able to break down the barriers that generally exist when someone is seeking employment, and connected job seekers directly with open opportunities. I am happy to do what I can to bridge the gap and help those eager to work find gainful employment.
Ranges of employers were on hand to speak directly with applicants, including retail, staffing, and health services companies, and continuing education programs.
If you are a job seeker and were unable to attend please contact our office at 516-882-0630 and we will try and connect you with one of the vendors

Brooks Celebrates Women of Distinction Honoree Charlene Jackson Thompson
I had a wonderful evening celebrating Baldwin resident and Women of Distinction honoree, Charlene Jackson Thompson. There are remarkable women whose lives, work and accomplishments contribute to making our communities better, our families stronger, and serve as a special example to others. Charlene does just that. She has dedicated her career to political, social and economic justice and bringing a voice to under-served communities. She is an active member of the South Shore community, and doesn't plan on stopping there. I am so proud to honor her love and commitment to her community and others.
