The New York Magazine Union has reached a deal for its first contract, after more than two years of negotiations, and the union says the framework includes salary increases for more than half of staffers and guaranteed yearly increases in pay.

The union, which said last week that it reached a deal in principle with management, shared details of the agreement Tuesday.

A date hasn’t been set for magazine staffers to vote on ratifying the contract with parent company Vox Media and New York magazine management. That date will be determined in the coming weeks, according to a spokeswoman for the NewsGuild of New York, of which the New York Magazine Union is a part. The union that represents many staffers at The Wall Street Journal is also affiliated with the NewsGuild.

The deal includes a $60,000 salary floor and raises of over $20,000 for some of the magazine’s “most historically underpaid members,” the union said. Staffers will also get guaranteed annual raises of between 2.75% and 3.25%, according to the union.

The deal also includes layoff protections and a ban on nondisclosure agreements in harassment or discrimination settlements, the union said.

“Everyone’s relieved,” said Bridget Read, a senior writer for the magazine at the union’s unit chair. “The gains for our members are just huge.”

The deal also governs the rights and pay related to any work for New York magazine that is sold for adaptation, for a TV show or movie, for example.

Vox Media acquired New York Media—including New York magazine—in 2019. A representative for the magazine confirmed that management reached a deal with the union and declined to comment beyond the framework of the agreement announced by the union.

The New York Magazine Union announced it was forming in 2018. The group represents more than 150 employees, including writers and editors.

Staffs of various media outlets have made moves to unionize in recent years, with some staging walkouts or strikes. The union for Wirecutter, the product-review site owned by the New York Times Co. , reached a deal with company management last month. The union had gone on strike for several days during the holiday shopping season, a busy time for the site.

BuzzFeed News Union staffers staged a walkout last month, claiming the company wouldn’t “budget on critical issues like wages.” The union timed the walkout with a procedural vote on whether to take BuzzFeed News’ parent company public through a deal with a special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. At the time, a spokesman for BuzzFeed said it had reached tentative agreements with the union on various issues.
