Dear Fellow New Yorker,
Today marks the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy – a storm that disrupted countless families, businesses and communities, and took the lives of 61 men and women in New York. As one of the worst natural disasters to hit New York in decades, Sandy also caused tremendous damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. More than 300,000 housing units were destroyed or damaged by the storm and more than two million people were left without power in Sandy’s wake, including 90% of utility customers on Long Island. Tonight at 8:00pm, please join in a moment of silence to mark the time that the storm surge in New York City first began. In spite of this tremendous storm, we have come together as New Yorkers and made real progress toward building back better and stronger than before. Earlier today, the Governor toured a few of the most impacted sites to see that progress in person. Click here to learn more about the MTA’s improvements in storm resiliency, and here and here to learn about the headway made by the Port Authority. The Governor also visited one of the more than 258 downstate gas stations that are already in the process of installing back-up power capacity (click here to read more). There is no denying the immense power of Mother Nature. But as New Yorkers we have been through our share of hard times, and today we are learning from the past and coming together as one with the next big storm in mind so that we don’t just replace what was lost – we build back better than we ever were before. Sincerely, The Office of the Governor |
