Senior VA Official Resigns in Wake of Allegations
Undersecretary for Health Resigns One Day After Testifying in Front of Senate Hearing

Robert Petzel, undersecretary of health at Veterans
Affairs, resigned just one day after testifying in front of a Senate
hearing.
Bloomberg
WASHINGTON—A senior Department of
Veterans Affairs official resigned Friday, just one day after testifying
in front of a Senate hearing on the state of VA health care.
Dr. Robert Petzel,
the undersecretary for health at the VA, resigned in the wake of
allegations that employees in the VA health-care system kept
unauthorized patient appointment wait lists that made wait times seem
shorter than they actually were.
"Today, I accepted the resignation of
Dr. Robert Petzel," Secretary Eric Shinseki said in a statement. "As we
know from the veteran community, most veterans are satisfied with the
quality of their VA health care, but we must do more to improve timely
access to that care."
Mr. Petzel couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
Mr.
Petzel has been serving in the VA system for about 40 years, including
as a chief of staff at a VA hospital and as director of a number of
health networks in the VA. He had been serving in his current position
since May 2009.
The VA in September 2013
had announced that Dr. Petzel would retire, but that he planned on
continuing to serve in his position until Senate confirmation of his
replacement. On May 1, President Obama announced he would be nominating
Dr. Jeffrey Murawsky as a the next undersecretary. A VA official said
the department doesn't know when the confirmation could occur.
Critics questioned whether speeding up his departure constituted a bold move by Mr. Shinseki.
"Petzel
was already scheduled to retire in 2014 and President Obama has already
announced his intention to nominate Petzel's replacement, so
characterizing this as a 'resignation' just doesn't pass the smell
test," Rep. Jeff Miller (R., Fla.), chairman of the House Committee on
Veterans Affairs said in a statement.
