HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (AP) — Former Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi has officially declared he's running for the congressional seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Steve Israel.
The 53-year-old Democrat says he'll continue Israel's work on behalf of middle class families, veterans and seniors.
Suozzi served eight years as county executive and eight years as Glen Cove mayor.
He spent Sunday crisscrossing the 3rd Congressional District, which runs along the North Shore from eastern Queens to western Suffolk County.
Queens Borough President Melinda Katz endorsed Suozzi at an event Sunday. Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1QZzcHe ) says she said Suozzi possessed the experience to bring federal dollars back to the district to address local issues like transportation and air traffic noise.
