Updates from the Faustman Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital. |

Dear Friends,
I am pleased to let you know that we had a tremendous year here at the lab. First and foremost, the Phase II BCG clinical trial has enrolled more than 120 established diabetic patients. We are well on our way to our target of 150 patients. In addition, the placebo patients from Phase I are also receiving BCG. We were able to share updates on the trial with our colleagues at the 76th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as well as the 52nd Annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. The feedback has been very positive and we are excited to announce that we hope to be presenting updates on the long-term followup of the Phase I patients early next year.
As you know, BCG is a generic vaccine that holds the promise of an affordable treatment option for patients of all means. Because BCG is a generic drug, and unlike other clinical trials that receive funding from companies that own the drug, our funding comes from private philanthropies and individuals who are impacted by the disease. We are the "open source" approach to clinical trials -- a clinical trial by the people for the people.
Completion of enrollment in the Phase II is an exciting near term goal, but our work is just beginning. As you may know, close monitoring of patients in the trial is a primary component of this research. In order to meet our goal of bringing BCG to market with an FDA approved indication for type 1 diabetes we need the funding to track patients in the trial for the next five years. Anything you can do to help us meet our fund raising goals and turn our full attention back to the research is appreciated.
Thank you so much for all of your support!
Denise L. Faustman, MD, PhD
