Scott Brinton, adjunct assistant professor of journalism in the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication has been named executive editor of the Long Island-based Herald Community Newspapers.  He was previously its senior editor for enterprise reporting and staff development.

In his new position, Prof. Brinton will lead a staff of two dozen editors, reporters and photographers in producing 17 weekly editions of the Herald, spanning Nassau County’s South Shore. The newspaper group has a readership of about 200,000.

Prof. Brinton has been with the Herald newspapers since 1993, producing more than 3,000 stories as either reporter, photographer or editor. In 2014, he was inducted into the Press Club of Long Island’s Journalism Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to coverage of some of Long Island’s biggest stories, including the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the 1996 crash of TWA Flight 800, and Superstorm Sandy.  An award-winning journalist, he has also freelanced for The New York Times and Newsday.

At Hofstra, where he has taught since 2009, Prof. Brinton co-directs the High School Summer Journalism Institute and founded the Community Journalism Program, a partnership between his graduate students and students at Hempstead High School.   Both programs are aimed at diversifying the workforce and attracting minority students from underserved communities to pursue careers in media and communications.
