Schumer backs bill to block fentanyl getting into U.S.

Sen. Charles Schumer
CAPITAL REGION -- With fentanyl, a synthetic opioid many times stronger than heroin, exacerbating the nation's opioid crisis, a new bill is aimed at preventing the drug from entering the country.
Sen. Charles Schumer says the bill, written by Sen. Markey of Massachusetts, would give Customs and Border Patrol the tools and resource to better detect fentanyl being brought into the country through mail and by consignment carriers.
Though pharmaceutical fentanyl can be misused, the senator said most of the fentanyl sold on the streets is illicitly manufactured, with China as the main source for the chemicals used, and Mexico as the main source for the illicit fentanyl smuggled into the U.S.
"These deadly substances are being delivered to our homes, being sold on our streets, and destroying our families. We know how they get here and where they come from, now we need to give CBP the resources to stop this flood and help save lives," said Senator Schumer. "The INTERDICT Act will provide those on the frontlines with hi-tech tools that can root out fentanyl and other synthetic opioids that are leading to tragic deaths here on Staten Island and throughout New York. The devastation these drugs cause is not a partisan issue, and I'll be fighting hard to get my colleagues on board to get this bill through the Senate."
Schumer also criticized a White House plan to cut the budget of the Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) by 95 percent.
Schumer said, "Senate Democrats will never vote to defund these vital programs, and I know there are many colleagues across the aisle who feel likewise, so I urge the President and Republicans in Congress to reject this proposal immediately."
