Melania Trump plans to take solo trip to Africa months after husband's 's--thole countries' remark

Melania Trump is planning to take a solo trip to Africa this fall, her spokeswoman announced Monday, marking yet another initiative from the First Lady that will likely be interpreted as her taking a subtle shot at her husband.

Spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham confirmed the First Lady plans to travel through several African nations in October, but wouldn’t comment on whether the trip has anything to do with President Trump’s infamous “shithole countries” remark.

“This will be my first time traveling to Africa and I am excited to educate myself on the issues facing children throughout the continent, while also learning about its rich culture and history,” the First Lady said in a statement provided to the Daily News. “We are a global society and I believe it is through open dialogue and the exchanging of ideas that we have a real opportunity to learn from one another.”

Trump also said she looks forward to highlighting the “successful humanitarian work” carried out in many African countries.

Exact dates and which nations the First Lady will visit were not immediately known, Grisham said. She plans to take the trip without her husband.

The President was internationally rebuked in January after his closed-door comment that the African continent is comprised of “shithole countries” was leaked to media outlets. Trump made the offensive remark while berating countries he didn’t want to accept migrants from.

The Africa trip wouldn’t be the first time Melania Trump makes public gestures at odds with her husband’s statements and behavior.

Earlier Monday, the First Lady decried cyberbullying during a speech at a anti-bullying summit in Rockville, Md.

“Let’s face it: most children are more aware of the benefits and pitfalls of social media than some adults, but we still need to do all we can to provide them with information and tools for successful and safe online habits,” she said.

Meanwhile, President Trump — who’s notorious around the world for cyberbullying political opponents — continued to attack special counsel Robert Mueller, berating his team of investigators as a bunch of “thugs.”
