A day after defending it, Nassau County OTB officials have toned down a risque Web site ad for nightclub dancing at its Plainview "Race Palace," calling the promoter's Internet images of a scantily clad woman and other content "inappropriate" for the OTB-owned facility.
In a formal statement Tuesday, Dino Amoroso, president of the Nassau Regional Off-Track Betting Corp., responded to criticisms from county legislators about the images of a partially dressed woman lounging on a leather couch and suggestive phrases.
Originally, OTB officials stressed the new approach - featuring a nightclub atmosphere along with the usual betting on televised horse races - would be "good, clean fun" aimed at a young adult audience and said there would be no nudity.
But Tuesday, OTB had a change of heart and toned down somewhat the images on the Web site.
"The inappropriate advertisement . . . does not reflect the nature of our facility and therefore has been removed," Amoroso said.
He praised Steven Carl, the Race Palace's caterer and restaurateur, for taking "prompt action on this matter."
Carl said Tuesday the Web site is changing the ad for the new Wednesday night-only format called "X S Wednesdays" at the facility, dropping any provocative images and a reference to a "Skin Room."
"I don't want anyone to have any misconceptions about what we're trying to do," said Carl. "We don't want to offend anyone."
The provocative Web site images irked some county legislators. Nassau County presiding officer Diane Yatauro said, "This ad appears to be in very poor taste. Clearly, it sends an inappropriate message." And Legis. David Denenberg (D-Merrick) said the ad was "offensive, in bad taste and we shouldn't tolerate it."
Told about the OTB's decision Tuesday to revise the ad, Yatauro said she was glad to see the reversal, though she supports OTB efforts to appeal to a younger audience. "It was pretty bad," Yatauro said after looking at the offending Web site images. "We want government to send the right messages - and this was not it."
Chastened but unbowed, OTB is changing its promotional images while going ahead with the new Wednesday format, said spokesman David Chavin. Starting Wednesday night, the Race Palace's restaurant will open its doors for dining by 6 p.m. and turn into a nightclub featuring live entertainment by 9 p.m.
The Web site was created by Long Island Promotional Group, whose spokeswoman Katrina King on Monday defended it. Tuesday, King declined to comment about the OTB's decision.
Nassau OTB is a public benefit corporation that answers to the 19-member Nassau County Legislature, which approves appointments to the OTB's governing board. OTB has traditionally been a source of patronage for whichever party controls the legislature.
