Cuomo taps Jay Jacobs to run New York’s Democratic Party
Butler v. Nassau Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation et al
Jay Jacobs wasn’t Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s choice to run the state’s Democratic Party in 2012, but he likes him for the job now.
The governor announced on Monday morning that the Nassau County Democratic Committee chair will replace incumbent state Chair Byron Brown, who took over the role in 2016. Jacobs has run the county committee since 2001 and was previously appointed state chair by then-Gov. David Paterson in 2009.
“Jay Jacobs is an outstanding champion for Long Island with an unparalleled record of bringing Democrats together to win historic victories, and I am excited to work with him to further strengthen our party and elect even more Democrats up and down the ballot,” Cuomo said in a statement.
The appointment was first reported by the Daily News.
Democrats have made great strides in Nassau County in recent years, including capturing the county executive post and multiple state senate seats. Jacobs also serves as an at-large member of the Democratic National Committee.
“In this consequential time for our party, our state and our country I am honored to have been asked by Gov. Cuomo to once again serve as New York State Democratic chair,” Jacobs said in a statement. “The governor has been a friend for more than twenty years and as I was honored to be the chair when he was first elected, after so many progressive achievements I am appreciative and excited for the opportunity to work with him and our state party once again as we continue to fight for a progressive agenda and marshal our resources for the upcoming challenges ahead.”
Across the aisle, at least 11 county Republican chairs are urging their state leader to resign.
