Stop scratching on holidays

Off Track Betting in New York State has been racing into a crisis called shrinking revenue. Some people have spitballed a solution: Don’t close on holidays.
New York State Racing Law bars racing on Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday, and the state has ruled OTBs can’t handle action on those days, even though they could easily broadcast races from out of state.
“You should be able to bet whenever you want,” said Jackson Leeds, a Nassau OTB employee who makes an occasional bet. He added some irrefutable logic: “How is the business going to make money if you’re not open to take people’s bets?”
Elias Tsekerides, president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, said OTB is open on Greek Orthodox Easter and Palm Sunday.
“I don’t want discrimination,” Tsekerides said. “They close for the Catholics, but open for the Greek Orthodox? It’s either open for all or not open.”
OTB officials have said they lose millions by closing on Palm Sunday alone, with tracks such as Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Turf Paradise and Hawthorne running.
One option: OTBs could just stay open and face the consequences. New York City OTB did just that back in 2003. The handle was about $1.5 million – and OTB was fined $5,000.
Easy money.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday blamed fellow Democrats in the state Senate for killing the deal to bring an Amazon headquarters to Queens.
“A small group of politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community — which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported bringing Amazon to Long Island City — the state’s economic future and the best interests of the people of this state,” Cuomo said in a statement.
“The New York State Senate has done tremendous damage. They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity.”
Cuomo did not mention them by name, but he was clearly referring to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) and Queens Sen. Michael Gianaris, the deputy majority leader.
Amazon’s headquarters would have been located in Gianaris’ district, but he became the fiercest critic of its $3 billion in subsidies and tax breaks.
Stewart-Cousins nominated Gianaris to serve on the state Public Authorities Control Board, which had the power to block or scuttle portions of the deal.
“Amazon chose to come to New York because we are the capital of the world and the best place to do business. We competed in and won the most hotly contested national economic development competition in the United States, resulting in at least 25,000-40,000 good paying jobs for our state and nearly $30 billion in new revenue to fund transit improvements, new housing, schools and countless other quality of life improvements,” Cuomo said in a statement.
“Bringing Amazon to New York diversified our economy away from real estate and Wall Street, further cementing our status as an emerging center for tech and was an extraordinary economic win not just for Queens and New York City, but for the entire region, from Long Island to Albany’s nanotech center.”
Trying to put the best spin on the stunning setback, he added:
“The fundamentals of New York’s business climate and community that attracted Amazon to be here — our talent pool, world-class education system, commitment to diversity and progressivism — remain and we won’t be deterred as we continue to attract world class business to communities across New York State.”
