Puerto Rico protesters stand up to vulgar texts, alleged corruption, and years of scandal
Puerto Rico is bracing for a massive protest Monday calling for Gov. Ricardo Rosselló’s resignation.
Vulgar and misogynistic text messages from him spurred thousands of Puerto Ricans to demonstrate in the capital San Juan on Friday and Saturday, the Associated Press reported. There were smaller gatherings across the rest of the island, with the movement expected to take on bigger proportions at the start of the workweek.
Presidential hopeful Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) traveled to the territory Friday, saying she was taking a stand against a local government that was “of, by and for the rich and powerful.”
A recently surfaced group chat among Rosselló and male members of his administration sparked the protests.
But they also come after years of scandals, including corruption charges against two of Rosselló’s former department heads.
The governor apologized for the vulgar comments — including calling former NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito a “whore” — but has avoided public appearances in recent days.
