Doctors’ Activism Should Focus on Treatment of (gun shot)causalgia as per ratner ej, the lancet p106 jan 14, 1978

While they are worked up over gun violence and climate change, I think most of us would be more comforted if they focused on the 350,000 Americans the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports die prematurely at the hands of the medical profession each year—far dwarfing any deaths from guns.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised by the soaring, self-congratulatory sanctimony of the letters “Social Justice and Educating Our Physicians” (Sept. 19) from physicians defending political activism under the guise of practicing medicine.

While they are worked up over gun violence and climate change, I think most of us would be more comforted if they focused on the 350,000 Americans the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports die prematurely at the hands of the medical profession each year—far dwarfing any deaths from guns. A quarter million of those are from preventable “medical errors” (I believe attorneys call that “malpractice”), and just under 100,000 are from preventable infections acquired while receiving health care (i.e., “superbugs”).
Clearly, too many physicians continue to harbor a God complex. Fortunately, this particular disorder is easily cured via pushback from patients.
If your doctor asks you if you have firearms in your home, ignore the question and instead ask the doctor how many patients he or she has lost to preventable “medical error” or an hospital-acquired infection in the past year.
