The talks this year have been overshadowed by a growing federal corruption probe that snared a top union official on Thursday. Vance Pearson, head of a regional office based near St. Louis, was charged in an alleged scheme to embezzle union money and spend cash on premium booze, golf clubs, cigars and swanky stays in California. It's the same region that UAW President Gary Jones led before taking the union's top office last year. Jones himself has been touched by the investigation, leading some union members to call for him to step down, but he hasn't been charged.

MEMBERS CHALLENGE HOFFA TAKEOVER OF CHICAGO LOCAL 786

Members and officers in Chicago Local 786 are challenging Hoffa's takeover of their union. They say Hoffa's authorized trusteeship serves Hoffa power brokers in the Joint Council like Terry Hancock, and the former JC 25 President John Coli who has plead guilty to taking employer payoffs and is headed to jail. This summer, Joint Council offices were raided by FBI agents. An investigation is ongoing.
08272019_mixer_ENRwebready_thumb.jpgHancock, who replaced Coli as the head of Joint Council 25, has been trying to take control of Local 786 for the past few years. Both Locals 731 and 786 represent Teamsters who work for ready mix companies in the construction industry. In 2018, Hancock tried to merge Local 786 into Local 731. His proposal was defeated by a vote of Local 786 members earlier this year.
Hancock responded to that membership snub by initiating Internal union charges against the officers of Local 786, questioning the enforcement of construction contracts and their stewardship of pension contributions and the Local 786 Fund. Hoffa approved an investigation, hearing and ultimately imposed a trusteeship.
