Piloting a Civics Education Initiative to Strengthen the Pipeline to Law School
This year, the LEEAP Ed. Project will pilot a civics education initiative designed for middle school students in under-resourced middle schools. The decline in formal civics instruction in secondary schools over the last decade is rooted in the emphasis on standardized testing for English and math. The impact in low-income school districts is particularly acute where instructional materials and resources to supplement social studies curriculum with civics are already minimal. Recent cuts to NYC’s education budget eliminate all funding for civics instruction. To help address the increasing disparities in civics-related resources, the Center will develop a civics education pilot this fall. The Center plans to curate interactive lessons on constitutional and democratic principles and provide information on enrichment programs for academic support and experiential learning opportunities. Students will be introduced to the law and the legal profession through both high school access counseling and connections to programs that support students from underrepresented communities in pursuit of careers in the law, strengthening the pipeline to higher education for low-income students.

In Conclusion
Our efforts to ensure educational equity are ever more critical as the hardships presented by online instruction and disrupted employment–and other direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic–affect more and more families. Our advocacy related to the admissions and evaluation criteria for the upcoming application cycle is intended to improve transparency and broaden access for low-income eighth grade students to higher-quality high schools. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your comments or if you are interested in pro bono opportunities in connection with our work. We can be reached at leeapproject@fordham.edu.
