By Lee Brown

Tim Davie, director-general of the UK’s national broadcaster, said the law — which could take effect as soon as Saturday — “appears to criminalize the process of independent journalism.

“It leaves us no other option than to temporarily suspend the work of all BBC News journalists and their support staff within the Russian Federation while we assess the full implications of this unwelcome development,” Davie said in a statement.

He insisted the BBC would “continue to report on the invasion of Ukraine” but “from outside Russia.”

The Russian parliament voted unanimously Friday to approve a draft law criminalizing the intentional spreading of what authorities decide is “fake” news. The measure could be signed by President Vladimir Putin and take effect as soon as Saturday.
