The heat is on the New York Racing Association in more ways than one.

With a 100-degree forecast, Saturday's card, featuring the $350,000 Suburban Handicap and the $150,000 Victory Ride Stakes, is in jeopardy of being canceled.

The NYRA will make a decision regarding the card Saturday morning.

On another front, the NYRA is facing more heat after a report released by the Franchise Oversight Board said the franchise "faces significant challenges moving forward" even with the Saratoga season set to open on July 20.

The report stated that NYRA lost more than $24 million in 2011, $7 million more than it lost in 2010, this despite getting an additional $6.3 million in revenue from the racino at Aqueduct.

"Without an infusion of cash generated from VLT operations at the Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct, NYRA finances for 2012 would continue to run deep in the red," wrote the board's chairman, Robert Megna, who also is Gov. Cuomo's budget director. "If expenses are allowed to continue to grow, not even the substantial investment made by the state into NYRA through the VLT support payments will be enough to cover the losses incurred by NYRA's operations. The board has stressed the importance for NYRA to develop a plan to make its racing operations profitable. Further, NYRA must establish a long-term financial goal to end its reliance on VLT subsidies and immediately develop plans on how it will meet this goal."

The report also raised some eyebrows regarding the VLT subsidies to purses in New York, which are now the best in the land.

Currently, the NYRA sits in limbo, as it waits for Cuomo to appoint a new board to run the franchise and appoint a new CEO and president.

Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags breezed five furlongs in 1:00.60 Friday morning at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland preparing for his next start, the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 29.
