Off Track Betting in New York State has been racing into a crisis called shrinking revenue. Some people have spitballed a solution: Don’t close on holidays.
New York State Racing Law bars racing on Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday, and the state has ruled OTBs can’t handle action on those days, even though they could easily broadcast races from out of state.
“You should be able to bet whenever you want,” said Jackson Leeds, a Nassau OTB employee who makes an occasional bet. He added some irrefutable logic: “How is the business going to make money if you’re not open to take people’s bets?”
Elias Tsekerides, president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, said OTB is open on Greek Orthodox Easter and Palm Sunday.
“I don’t want discrimination,” Tsekerides said. “They close for the Catholics, but open for the Greek Orthodox? It’s either open for all or not open.”
OTB officials have said they lose millions by closing on Palm Sunday alone, with tracks such as Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Turf Paradise and Hawthorne running.
One option: OTBs could just stay open and face the consequences. New York City OTB did just that back in 2003. The handle was about $1.5 million – and OTB was fined $5,000.
Easy money.

I’ve lived here in Nassau County for many years with my wife and children, and I want the next generation to be able to raise their kids in a place that has the best schools, the best jobs, and the best opportunities for economic and professional advancement.

Today our fiscal situation and dysfunction in County government stand in the way of our shared prosperity and progress. I plan to address those challenges and help families, businesses, working families, and young people realize their full potential here.
I plan to use my experience and background to make Nassau County stronger and better.
For the past twenty-five years, I’ve built thriving businesses, created many jobs, and guided the careers of professionals in finance, real-estate, and other fields. I’ve balanced complex budgets, run my own firm, and learned the value of creative problem-solving, long-term planning, and working hard to achieve my goals.
After graduating Cum Laude from SUNY Albany, I started my business career in New York City’s financial sector. I learned the ins and outs of business and finance: how markets affect our lives, why some companies thrive while others struggle to survive, and the importance of fiscal responsibility and smart, straightforward accounting.
I developed an appreciation for knowing how to manage all aspects of an operation – everything from finance to personnel – and how to keep innovative businesses running smoothly from the ground up. My commitment to innovation has led me to invest in state-of-the-art technology companies through Long Island based Canrock Ventures, and in the next generation of start-up firms. I’m also an active owner and investor of commercial real estate. More recently, I’ve become a restaurateur, opening two well-regarded restaurants in our area: Aldea in Manhattan and Lula Trattoria in Mineola.
In 2009, I was elected to the Roslyn School Board on the promise I would use my business and financial background to help my school district run more efficiently. Since then we’ve refinanced the district’s debt, set up cooperative busing with other districts, explored more affordable employee healthcare plans, and collaborated with NEFCU to create a community credit card that provides a percentage of purchases to be donated back to our schools. I’m proud of the cost-savings and revenue-generating results I’ve achieved with colleagues.
From my work with the school board, I’ve experienced the benefits that come from creating opportunities for residents to communicate and collaborate on solutions to our shared problems. As a result, I launched Nassau Suggestion Box, an online forum where it is easy to offer ideas for budgetary and fiscal reform and get the community to vote on them. This website has amplified the voices and concerns of taxpayers. I’m thrilled I’ve generated such meaningful dialogue on ways to improve Nassau County government.
Something else that matters deeply to me is bringing volunteers together under very difficult circumstances to assist people in need. I’ve traveled extensively with All Hands Volunteers, an organization for disaster relief, to Mississippi, Iowa and Haiti, after major hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. When Hurricane Sandy hit, I played a lead role in launching Project Long Island—an All Hands effort to help local homeowners remove debris, clean up their properties, retrieve personal items, and establish a solid foundation of support for the long-term rebuilding effort that will continue for many years to come.
I plan to build on my twenty-five year record of success as a businessman and community leader as your next Nassau County Executive. I will put our budget on the road to long-term fiscal health, and enable Nassau County to make smarter investments in job creation, the environment, education, technology, and innovation. Together, with your help and support, we can build a greater Nassau County!
