CASINO DISCUSSION:
Author Robert Steele to Discuss Casinos’ Impact on Connecticut

Monday, February 2, 7:00
Author Robert Steele will speak in Westbury on Monday, February 2 about the impact of Connecticut’s casinos and the spread of casino gambling to main streets across the nation. The talk is being hosted by the Westbury Memorial Public Library and will begin at 7 pm, followed by a question and answer period.

A former CIA officer, U.S. Congressman, and nominee for governor of Connecticut, Steele is the author of “The Curse: Big-Time Gambling’s Seduction of a Small New England Town” (Levellers Press, Amherst, MA). The book is a novel set against the explosion of casino gambling in Connecticut during the 1990s, when two Indian tribes built the world’s two biggest casinos in the southeastern corner of the state. The story begins with the Pequot War in 1637, and then jumps 350 years as a Connecticut family, led by a descendant of one of the Puritan soldiers, becomes embroiled in a battle to stop a third casino that threatens the family’s town and ancestral home.

WBZ Boston’s Dan Rea calls the novel “powerful” and Connecticut author Martin Shapiro describes it as “compelling and timely…a riveting story of history, money, and politics that will make you wonder where America is headed.”

The book, which is in its second printing, comes at a time when the Northeast is becoming saturated with casinos, casino revenue is plummeting in Connecticut and New Jersey, and Off-Track Betting (OTB) officials are proposing major slots casinos for Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
