Biker Dad: Bikers to battle juvenile diabetes

Posted: Oct 06, 2015 12:07 PM EDTUpdated: Oct 06, 2015 5:00 PM EDT
SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC) -
Diabetes is the sixth most common killer in the state of Mississippi. Mississippians are at the highest risk of getting diabetes compared to residents of any other state. In Tennessee, it's not much better. Nearly 10 percent of adults have the disease.
But it's also a growing problem among children. There's not only Type 1 childhood diabetes, but also a growing epidemic of kids and teenagers with what is commonly called adult onset diabetes. According to the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, "the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (formerly called "adult onset diabetes") has increased in children and teens. Children with type 2 diabetes are often overweight and have a family history of the disease. Their pancreas still produces insulin but their body cannot use it properly, a condition known as insulin resistance."
That's why bikers are gearing up once more for a cause this weekend in Southaven. Southern Thunder Harley Davidson is teaming up with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for "Bikers for a Cure" this Saturday. There will be BBQ, a raffle and other prizes.
The event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, October 10.
Be careful out there, and please follow me on social media.
