From the Office of The Governor
Dear Fellow New Yorker,
Today is World AIDS Day—a time when we remember the friends, relatives and loved ones that have been taken by this disease, along with the countless others who are continuing to raise awareness and push for an end to AIDS. New York was once the epicenter of the AIDS crisis—but now we are showing the nation how to fight back and make this epidemic a thing of the past.
The fight against AIDS has been 25 years of long, hard work. At first, the national response to AIDS was nonexistent—highlighting the fear and bigotry that had permeated our society. For too long, the disease itself was talked about only in whispers.
But in New York, we don’t just talk, we do. It makes me incredibly proud that the first state to acknowledge the problem and present a real plan to start addressing it was New York, under Governor Mario Cuomo. It’s the right fight, and one I intend to see through to the end.
Already, there are signs that we’re starting to win. This year is the first year that there have been no cases of mother-to-newborn transmissions of HIV. Along with effective new drugs like PrEP, we are making powerful strides towards ending the epidemic. But there’s more still to do.
That’s why I’m going to the legislature this session and asking them to commit an additional $200 million to help bring an end to the epidemic by 2020. We are going to:
  • Expand the availability of affordable housing and providing additional housing assistance for those living with HIV;
  • Make life insurance available to people ages 30-60 living with HIV;
  • Invest more into Medicaid Managed Care Plans; and
  • Invest more to help enhance services at “One Stop” STD clinics in New York City.
We are making rapid progress toward a future where more people know their status, medication is easily accessible, and new cases are more and more rare. As we mark World AIDS Day, we remember the more than 150,000 of our brothers and sisters whom we have lost, and we recommit ourselves to ending this epidemic once and for all.
Sincerely,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
