HORSE RACING is quintessentially Kentuckian, and its proprietors want a say in who represents the state. The National Thoroughbred Racing Association Political Action Committee, known as Horse PAC, donated $20,000 to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s re-election effort, according to recent filings. He is likely to face Democrat Amy McGrath, a well-funded former fighter pilot, in November.
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association has long supported McConnell, and credited him for securing a 2019 tax break that allows racehorse owners to write off the depreciation of their horses. In 2014, McConnell ran a campaign ad about the Kentucky Derby that he narrated, calling the Derby “a race where the horses tell us as much about the people as they do about themselves.”
