Stop scratching on holidays
Published: June 1, 2012
Off Track Betting in New York State has been racing into a crisis called shrinking revenue. Some people have spitballed a solution: Don’t close on holidays.
New York State Racing Law bars racing on Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday, and the state has ruled OTBs can’t handle action on those days, even though they could easily broadcast races from out of state.
“You should be able to bet whenever you want,” said Jackson Leeds, a Nassau OTB employee who makes an occasional bet. He added some irrefutable logic: “How is the business going to make money if you’re not open to take people’s bets?”
Elias Tsekerides, president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, said OTB is open on Greek Orthodox Easter and Palm Sunday.
“I don’t want discrimination,” Tsekerides said. “They close for the Catholics, but open for the Greek Orthodox? It’s either open for all or not open.”
OTB officials have said they lose millions by closing on Palm Sunday alone, with tracks such as Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Turf Paradise and Hawthorne running.
One option: OTBs could just stay open and face the consequences. New York City OTB did just that back in 2003. The handle was about $1.5 million – and OTB was fined $5,000.
Easy money.
congressman calls her ‘this girl’
Ho boy.
A Florida congressman dismissed progressive superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as “this girl” over the weekend — prompting a rebuke Monday from the 28-year-old who brought down heavyweight Rep. Joe Crowley in a stunning primary upset last month.
“You look at this girl Ocasio-Cortez or whatever she is, I mean, she’s in a totally different universe,” Rep. Ron DeSantis said on at a campaign stop on Saturday that was posted to YouTube Monday.
“It’s basically socialism wrapped in ignorance,” the Republican said of the Democratic Socialist’s platform.
Ocasio-Cortez responded in kind on Monday.
“Rep DeSantis, it seems you‘re confused as to ‘whatever I am.’ I am a Puerto Rican woman. It‘s strange you don’t know what that is, given that ~75,000 Puerto Ricans have relocated to Florida in the 10 mos since MarĂa. But I’m sure these new FL voters appreciate your comments!” she tweeted.
The lawmaker also took swipes at Ocasio-Cortez for a flub where she called Israel’s existence an “occupation” of Palestinian land. She later walked back the remarks, saying “I am not the expert on geopolitics.”
“Well wait a minute — you’re saying that one of our best allies is occupying some country. There’s never been a Palestinian state. You’re just repeating these canned, left-wing talking points, and you’re somehow the savior of the Democratic Party? Good Lord,” DeSantis said Saturday. “She has no clue what she’s talking about.”
DeSantis, an ally of President Trump, is running for governor in the Sunshine State, where he hopes to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Rick Scott.
President Trump tweeted his support of DeSantis in December before he officially announced he was running.
