Beer Hall at the Plattduetsche Biergarten

The Beer Hall at the Plattduetsche Biergarten is open on our winter hours schedule at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, providing both a family-friendly venue and a different and fun choice for a night out.
The beer garden, or Biergarten as it is known in German, originated in Bavaria during the 19th century when dark lager beer was predominant. Since the fermentation of the beer had to take place at temperatures between four and eight degrees Celsius, Bavarian brewing regulations decreed that it had to be brewed between the end of September and the end of April. The kettles were also heated to an extremely high temperature during the brewing process, which created a huge threat of fire that could easily spread throughout an entire city, providing an additional reason to ban brewing during the summer months.
In order to sell the beer during the summer, large breweries dug cellars in the bank of the river Isar, which allowed them to keep the beer at proper temperatures. The banks were covered in gravel and chestnut trees were planted to provide shade and ensure the cellars stayed cool enough. Simple tables and benches were soon set up under the trees so that the breweries could also serve the beer at the cellars and the beer garden was born.
The Plattduetsche Park has been bringing this tradition to Long Island since the early 1900s with its Biergarten. After undergoing a complete renovation, the Biergarten is open every weekend year-round. Typically enjoyed as an open-air venue, the building provides two levels of indoor seating space that has an environmentally-friendly geothermal heating system plus an indoor stage for use during cold or inclement weather. On nicer days, the 12-foot glass doors on the sides of the building can be opened to the outdoor picnic area, joining the two spaces. Other amenities include two large bar spaces, free Wi-Fi access, big-screen HDTVs and a projection screen for sporting events, patios and a built-in sound system for better control of music volume.
While the new Beer Hall features many modern amenities, we still wanted to preserve our rich heritage and traditions for future generations. Included in the design are relics of our past, such as our dining tables made from reclaimed bowling alleys discovered under three layers of wood flooring during the demolition of the previous building and old floor planks repurposed as new wainscoting on the bars and walls. The expanded menu includes choices that one might find in a Munich Biergarten along with traditional German favorites and some continental choices to accommodate everyone. Standout menu items include many different types of wurst, homemade German potato salad & potato pancakes, giant hot pretzels, Little Bavarians (pretzel slider rolls with bratwurst, bacon and Swiss cheese), and apple strudel. Executive Chef Herbert Aigner will also feature daily specials and a kids menu is available. For indoor seating, reservations are strongly recommended.
If you’re in a hurry or just want a bite, try our From the Brathaus menu. Modeled after the traditional German biergarten offerings, you’ll find wursts, leberkäse, burgers and several other selections. The From the Brathaus menu is available in the designated picnic table area tableside with wait service (weather and staff permitting) or as a self-service option at the Brathaus. Only designated tables feature wait service, the rest of the picnic tables are open seating for those who opted for self-service at the Brathaus or are just enjoying a beer and the atmosphere. The From the Brathaus menu is also our Late Night menu, which is available from 11:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. on Friday & Saturday nights. Please note, we do not accept reservations for the picnic tables outside or lower level of the Beer Hall. If you’d like to reserve space, the upstairs dining room is available. The lower-level private dining room in the Beer Hall is available for groups of 18 adults (minimum) to 25 (maximum) to reserve. There is a minimum charge per person of $35, if the minimum is not met, a room charge may be applied to the bill. Please note that no outside food or beverage is allowed in the Biergarten or Beer Hall, nor can we store any outside food in our refrigerators due to Board of Health regulations. This policy is in effect at all times, including festivals and special events as well as regular Biergarten hours.
