Passage of the 2015-16 State Budget

Dear Fellow New Yorker, I’m proud to announce today that we have successfully passed the 2015-2016 State Budget. This $142 billion budget is the most meaningful we have agreed to in many years, not because of what we are spending but because of how we are spending it. We are not just maintaining services and the status quo with this budget. We are investing in a new future for our state. This balanced budget enacts policies that will create jobs, rebuild trust in state government, and transform our public schools in a way that will impact future generations of New York’s children. Highlights of the budget agreement include: Major investment in education with a 6.1% increase in funding, our largest commitment ever to schools  A 9-point Education Transformation Act of 2015 that overhauls the state's education system from beginning to end  Extensive ethics reform package that includes the strongest outside income disclosure laws for legislators in the nation  $1.5 billion to jumpstart upstate economic development through our Upstate Revitalization Initiative  $500 million to ensure that every New Yorker has broadband access by the end of 2018  A new Get On Your Feet student loan forgiveness program to provide relief to college graduates with high debt  An economic mobility agenda that helps give every New Yorker a chance to succeed You can see the full budget agreement here. For the past several weeks we asked New Yorkers like you to support these initiatives. Thousands upon thousands of you did, signing statements of support, writing letters to the editor, and sharing with your friends on social media. I thank you deeply for the commitment you’ve shown, and the work we’ve done together. Together, we’ve put forward a state budget that will make a difference in people’s lives.
