Councilwoman Anna M. Kaplan was elected in November 2011. Anna represents the 4th District of the Town of North Hempstead which includes the villages of Roslyn, Roslyn Estates, Munsey Park, North Hills, Great Neck, Great Neck Gardens, Kensington, Kings Point, Thomaston, and the unincorporated areas of Manhasset and Great Neck, including Great Neck Gardens and Allenwood.
In 2007, Anna was elected trustee of the Great Neck Public Library District and served as both Vice-President of the Board and Chairperson of the Policy and Bylaws Committee. During her term, Anna played a key role in the acquisition and renovation of space for the Library’s new Station Branch which opened in December 2010.
Recently, Anna served on the Town of North Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals, where she heard claims by property owners and voted on zoning variances. Anna has also been an active member of the Great Neck Public Schools P.T.A, and currently serves as an Executive Board Member at Great Neck North Middle School.

Anna has been honored for her service to the community by the Nassau County Legislature, the Nassau County Comptroller’s Office and the Town of North Hempstead. In 2010, she was officially recognized as a Woman of Distinction by New York State Senator Craig Johnston.
Anna was born Anna Monahemi in northern Iran and raised in Tehran. When the Islamic Revolution took place in 1979, Anna was sent to the United States at the age of twelve as part of an international effort to help the Jewish children of Iran leave the country. Originally arriving in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Anna was eventually sent to live with a foster family in Chicago where she attended high school and learned to speak English while waiting for her own family to be able to join her in the United States.
After she was reunited with her family, Anna moved first to Forest Hills and eventually to Great Neck. She went on to graduate from Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University and then received a J.D. from Benjamin Cardozo School of Law.
Anna has the honor of being the first Iranian-American to be elected to municipal office in New York State. Following her historic election as Councilwoman, Anna was profiled by Lifetime Networks as part of Lifetime’s “Remarkable Women” campaign.
Anna is a twenty-one year resident of the Town of North Hempstead. She resides in the Village of Kensington with her husband Darren, and daughters Sarah and Taylor. She is fluent in Farsi, Aramaic and Turkish.
