Rep. Peter King has beat back numerous challengers in his 26 years in Congress, but he’s never come up against someone who built a campaign on motherhood.
Liuba Grechen Shirley, 37, is giving the Long Island incumbent the toughest race of his career by repeatedly reminding voters how hard it is to be a working mother.
She has successfully petitioned the Federal Election Commission to allow the use of campaign funds to pay for child care for her two young kids, who have starred in her campaign ads.
The Democratic newcomer frames kitchen table issues like health care and the economy in terms of motherhood struggles, including her ongoing fight with an insurance company to pay for her son’s two-night hospital stay.
“Pete King voted to take health care away from 74,000 people in his district alone — and that’s why Long Islanders are rallying around our campaign to pass Medicare for All, fight for working families and stand up for women,” Grechen Shirley said.
She has also raised more than $1.5 million, compared to King’s $1.2 million.
King still has the edge -—but the race is expected to be close.
“If he does win, it will certainly be by his smallest margin ever,” said Patrick Murray of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.
Nassau County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs said Grechen Shirley’s campaign approach is authentic but also speaks to the year’s increased voter enthusiasm among women.
“The more women who come out to vote, the more likely it is that Peter King’s next trip to Washington will be with cardboard boxes to pack up,” Jacobs said.
King, 74, is running on his record: health care for 9/11 first responders, Hurricane Sandy aid and coordinating a federal response to MS-13 gang violence on Long Island.
“I’ve done more for my district than any congressman in the history of Long Island,” King said. “I’ll stand on the record.”
The son of an NYPD police officer, King has built a reputation as a strong supporter of homeland security and immigration enforcement. But he’s also proud of his work with Democrats and noted that the Lugar Center and Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy have ranked him the most bipartisan member of the House.
Joseph Cairo, chairman of the Nassau County Republican Committee, said voters recognize and value King as an effective spokesman for Long Island.
“In the year of the woman, Peter is a man who will be recognized for what he has accomplished and what’s he’s done for his constituents,” Cairo said.
As for concerns of working moms, King says he gets it.
