on to Cuomo: Return donations from ‘Buffalo Billions’ convicts

Gov. Cuomo’s Democratic rival Cynthia Nixon on Saturday called for him to return thousands in campaign cash from donors convicted in the “Buffalo Billion” bid-rigging case.
Alain Kaloyeros, the former head of SUNY Polytechnic Institute, and three upstate developers were found guilty of fraud, conspiracy and other charges on Thursday.
The men worked with corrupt lobbyist and Cuomo ally Todd Howe to make sure construction contracts for projects in Buffalo and Syracuse were awarded to the developers’ firms.
One of the developers, Louis Ciminelli, along with his family and affiliated companies, gave $113,550 to Cuomo’s campaigns since 2008, state filings show. He also hosted a fundraiser for the guv that raised another $250,000, according to court papers.
Steven Aiello and Joe Gerardi of COR Development, along with other COR executives, associated entities and family members, donated at least $250,000 to Cuomo’s campaign when the company first started trying to get state-funded contracts, court papers show. The donations were made from 2011 to 2013.
“The Governor made the ridiculous claim yesterday that the Buffalo Billion trial ‘had nothing to do with any campaign contributions,’” Nixon said in a statement Saturday. “Cuomo needs to stop living in a fantasy land and take responsibility for the corrupt culture that he and his $30 million warchest has [sic] created. He should return this dirty money immediately.”

A Cuomo spokeswoman said his campaign has “segregated” funds it received from people connected to the Kaloyeros trial and is consulting with law enforcement on what to do with the cash.
