Aqueduct Race Track’s long-awaited casino to open Oct. 28

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Aqueduct Race Track’s long-awaited casino — Resorts World New York — will open its doors Oct. 28, officials said Friday.

The facility, with 5,000 gaming machines, is expected to put New York Racing Association and the state’s entire thoroughbred industry on solid financial ground for the foreseeable future.

NYRA purses are expected to increase by $30 million next year alone, and the track operator is planning more than $100 million worth of Saratoga Race Course capital improvements later this decade.

“As soon as that money starts to flow, the purse structure will be improved and New York will be poised to take its place among the greatest racing venues in the world,” said NYRA board member Charles Wait of Saratoga Springs. “Long-deferred improvements at the track can also begin.”

The casino will start up with 2,485 video lottery terminals and electronic table games. The remainder are expected to come on line by Jan. 1.

“The opening of Genting’s Resorts World New York Casino is a highly anticipated event that will benefit all of the stakeholders at Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course,” NYRA President and CEO Charles Hayward said. “Increased purses will help bring more top owners, trainers and horses to our tracks, create larger fields for our customers to wager on and generate higher handle for our races.”

There will be two separate gaming venues.

Times Square Casino on the first floor will offer a variety of dining selections, from seasonal and international offerings at the Aqueduct Buffet to a new food court featuring Wolfgang Puck Express, Stage Deli and Queens Burger.

Bar 360 and Lounge will be centrally located on the gaming floor and include seating for 200 in a theater-in-the-round setting for live music, comedy and other entertainment. Bar 360 will also have a 28-foot-by-18-foot high-definition television screen — the biggest in Queens — that will show live action from major sporting events.

Later this year, Resorts World will unveil 5th Avenue Casino and Crockfords Casino on the second floor, along with Central Park Events Center. The 130,000-square-foot venue will be the largest event space in Queens. Continued...
The second floor will also include RW Prime Steakhouse and the Chinese-themed Genting Palace.

By the end of 2011, a new covered sky bridge connecting Resorts World directly to the Aqueduct subway station will be fully operational.

Resorts World is the first entertainment destination of its kind in the five boroughs of New York City. The casino will be run by the Malaysia-based Genting Group, a global company founded in 1965 that also has casino resorts in Asia, Europe, North America and on all four oceans through its 50 percent ownership of the Norwegian Cruise Line and Star Cruises brands.

Genting employs nearly 45,000 people.

“This project has created more than 1,350 jobs, and together we’ve built a truly state-of-the-art entertainment facility for the borough of Queens and beyond,” Resorts World President Michael Speller said in a statement.

Resorts World Casino is part of New York Lottery’s video lottery program. All gaming machines are supplied by the Lottery and are controlled by a statewide computer system it operates.
