Pope calls Andrew Cuomo to open OTBs Sundays

Stop scratching on holidays
Published: June 1, 2012

Off Track Betting in New York State has been racing into a crisis called shrinking revenue. Some people have spitballed a solution: Don’t close on holidays.
New York State Racing Law bars racing on Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday, and the state has ruled OTBs can’t handle action on those days, even though they could easily broadcast races from out of state.
“You should be able to bet whenever you want,” said Jackson Leeds, a Nassau OTB employee who makes an occasional bet. He added some irrefutable logic: “How is the business going to make money if you’re not open to take people’s bets?”
Elias Tsekerides, president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, said OTB is open on Greek Orthodox Easter and Palm Sunday.
“I don’t want discrimination,” Tsekerides said. “They close for the Catholics, but open for the Greek Orthodox? It’s either open for all or not open.”
OTB officials have said they lose millions by closing on Palm Sunday alone, with tracks such as Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Turf Paradise and Hawthorne running.
One option: OTBs could just stay open and face the consequences. New York City OTB did just that back in 2003. The handle was about $1.5 million – and OTB was fined $5,000.
Easy money.

(New York, 4-15 March 2013)

Madame Chair,

This year’s choice of this important topic underlines the tragic reality of the continued victimization of women and girls around the world by myriad forms of exploitation and violence, in a shameful continuum, ranging from sex-selective abortions, female infanticide, abandonment, trafficking, rape, domestic abuse, rape as a weapon of war, forced prostitution, to misguided government policies unduly restricting the number of children per family and other forms of violence. Many women and girls, from the moment of conception until natural death, face an array of immoral and dehumanizing acts of violence. In addition, degrading practices, such as female genital mutilation, child marriage, forced sterilization and forced abortions, characterize this continuum and constitute heinous forms of oppression trampling upon the dignity of women and girls. This reality demands that Governments as well as all societal institutions undertake concerted and comprehensive efforts to address this grave problem.

Intervention of the Holy See51st Session of the Commission on Social Development

(New York, 6-15 February 2013)
Madame Chairperson,
My delegation congratulates you and the bureau on your election and looks forward to contributing towards a fruitful 51st session of the Commission.
The Commission’s priority theme for this year’s session, "Promoting empowerment of people in achieving poverty eradication, social integration and full employment and decent work for all", comes at a time when an estimated 456 million workers continue to live on less than $1.25 day and, as the Secretary General’s report notes, 200 million people are still unemployed as at the end of 2011. These figures are a stark reminder of the persistent presence of extreme poverty in our world. How could the current situation not awaken the conscience of policy-makers, private enterprises, individuals and families to urgently engage in the promotion of a culture of work so fundamentally akin to our human dignity?

The outcome document further emphasized the need for poverty reduction to be pursued within a framework of sustainable development in which there is a commitment to equitable growth and to proper stewardship of the environment. This document recognized that people are at the center of sustainable development and that we must continue to strive for a world that is just, equitable and which includes all people- from the most vulnerable to the most helpless.
