Republican legislative contender Kevin McCaffrey got a personal letter from Democratic Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone earlier this month after he saw the candidate’s palm card vowing “reduce the county’s $250 million deficit.”
In the letter dated Sept. 3, Bellone, who lives in the district where McCaffrey’s running, asked the GOP candidate for his “suggestions on how you will reduce the county deficit . . . so I can consider them in my upcoming budget.” Bellone’s letter asked for McCaffrey’s ideas by Sept. 9, so they could be included in the budget which was unveiled Friday.
In response, McCaffrey, Lindenhurst’s deputy mayor, said “Though you have been in office for more than 700 days, you asked me to provide fixes to your executive budget within a seven day deadline. This disparity makes me question the sincerity of you letter and actual willingness to work across party lines.”
He said he had “several idea and suggestions,” which he did not detail, but said he will share them with district voters and “ask them for their support.”
McCaffrey, who is also president of Teamster Local 707, scolded the Democratic county executive for sending his letter via Fed Ex, a nonunion carrier. “I would appreciate that any future correspondence from you be delivered via a union carrier,” he wrote.
