5 Questions I Need You to Ask to Help Protect Nail Salon Workers
From the Office of The Governor
Dear Fellow New Yorker,
I want to let you know about the next step in our campaign for #NailSalonSafety. So far we’ve enacted emergency regulations, we’ve introduced legislation to protect workers, we’ve educated workers, and now I’m asking for your help.
When you or someone you know visits a nail salon, I want you to ask these 5 questions to the people in charge:
  1. Are workers paid at least the minimum wage and overtime?
  2. Is appropriate protective equipment (respirator mask, gloves, eye protection) provided to workers and used?
  3. Is there adequate ventilation (no strong chemical odors)?
  4. Is the salon business license posted in plain view?
  5. Is the Nail Salon Workers' Bill of Rights posted in plain view?
Starting today, we are distributing this information on cards in person and online to make it easy to remember.
If you find something wrong, please call the Nail Salon Industry Task Force Hotline: (888) 469-7365
There are 3,300 nail salons in the state of New York. More nail salons than any other state, and more nail salons than we have Starbucks, believe it or not. The bad news is it’s very hard for the Department of State to police 3,300 nail salons. The good news is, with 3,300 nail salons, consumers have a choice.
If there is a nail salon that is abusing its workers, simply don’t give them your business. You have 3,299 other options. Walk down the block and patronize a business that treats their workers fairly. We are doing everything we can, but nothing can change industry practices faster than the consumer and the marketplace applying pressure to the unscrupulous few who are taking advantage of their employees.
New Yorkers will not tolerate abuse of workers. We will not tolerate the exploitation of workers who are afraid to go to law enforcement. We will not tolerate it, it is not legal, and we will enforce the law.
Thank you for all your help. Together we will protect all of New York’s workers.
Sincerely,
