Diabetes Center
The Diabetes Center, founded in 1994, is a regional resource for diabetes diagnosis, education, and diabetes treatment. The Center represents the collaborative efforts of Yale School of Medicine, Yale School of Nursing and Yale-New Haven Hospital to provide comprehensive diabetes care for more than 2,000 adult patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, as well as those with pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and polycystic ovary syndrome.
The Center offers diabetes care in both outpatient and inpatient settings, and as an American Diabetes Association (ADA)-recognized site for diabetes education, the Diabetes Center offers free educational diabetes programs for patients and their families.
Focusing on lifestyle interventions and employing the latest medications and technologies to treat or prevent diabetes, the Center is distinguished by its full range of diabetes care, one-on-one lifestyle counseling, glucose monitoring instruction and insulin-injection training. Group diabetes education classes and a resource room help patients learn more about their diabetes and establish an appropriate program to ensure healthier outcomes.

Advances in Diabetes Treatment
The Center's clinicians rely on their extensive experience with insulin pumps and continuous glucose-monitoring devices. In fact, in 1979, our physicians utilized the resources of the hospital's adult and pediatric clinical research centers and developed the world's first insulin pump - a milestone for diabetes treatment.More recently, YNHH endocrinologists led the first pediatric study of an automatic insulin delivery device known as the artificial pancreas -- a pager-sized device that includes a sensor that manages sugar levels continuously. In addition, endocrinologists are now studying novel methods to prevent and treat this form of the disease using immunotherapy.
The multidisciplinary team guides each patient through diabetes management using the latest technologies available. The Center also offers patients on-site A1c testing.
Glucose Control
The Center's Inpatient Diabetes Management Team, the only one of its kind in Connecticut, conducts rounds daily on YNHH patients with high blood glucose who are hospitalized at YNHH to improve their glucose management. YNHH is a national leader in the development of protocols to ensure optimal glucose control during hospitalization. The Yale Insulin Infusion Protocol is now used by hospitals around the world to achieve meticulous glucose control in critical care units. The Glucometrics Web site, a collaboration with the Yale Center for Medical Informatics, is used by hundreds of hospitals to help measure and improve the quality of their inpatient glucose control.Helpful links for diabetes patients
