Agreement Reached to Protect Nail Salon Workers

From the Office of The Governor
Dear Fellow New Yorker,
This week, we reached an agreement with legislative leaders to protect and support workers in nail salons.
In the past several weeks we have taken significant steps in this fight—introducing emergency regulations, clarifying the processes for licensing, and creating a multi-agency enforcement task force.
This law will complement those changes and make it explicitly clear: Exploitation of workers will not be tolerated in the state of New York.
This legislation allows the State to crack down on bad actors in the nail salon industry and hold them accountable. It also streamlines the licensing process for workers so they can get the training they need to move forward professionally without being held hostage to their employers. Our actions will make the nail salon industry safer and fairer, and I am proud that New York is standing up to protect workers who cannot protect themselves.
This was swift and productive action to help protect workers, and I, for one, thank the legislature for their work.
I look forward to signing this bill into law, and my administration will work over the coming months to fully implement these protections. Thank you for your help so far. Together, we’ve made New York State’s workers safer.
Sincerely,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
