Home stretch brings out the public sector sweetener bills
We’re less than a week away from the scheduled end of the legislative session and like clockwork, a slew of bills that would enhance the retirements and other benefits for public employees have been offered up.
Typically, these bills don’t get very far and they give lawmaker a chance to earn points with public sector unions who can support or oppose a given politician around election time.
The Citizens Budget Commission, a spending watchdog, recently compiled a list of some of the bills here. They count more than 50 such proposal that are out there.
Among them: a measure that would allow current retirees to participate in older, more generous (and costly) pension tiers, a measure that would let teachers get retirement credits for non-school service; and evergreen, or recurrent bills that would prohibit government from cutting or raising the cost of public sector health benefits for retirees. Those are notable this year, as public sector contracts are coming due — the Public Employees Federation contract has already run out. While there’s been no news about how the bargaining has gone, members have expressed fears that the state may look to charging more for retiree health premiums, although that would be avoided if workers retired by a certain date.
