YRC PLANS TO REDUCE TERMINALS

YRC management has announced they plan to reduce terminals from 384 to 320 by the end of 2020. In comparison, the combined Yellow and Roadway terminals that formed YRC Freight totaled 571 in 2009.

This plan was described as streamlining and in some instances, cohabitation. Holland, New Penn and Reddaway operations are part of the plan. The consolidation will include sales, management and back office changes.
CEO Darrin Hawkins claimed, “We’re not taking away any brands, they’re all vibrant and powerful in the marketplace.” However, with the new plan, there will be a single operations leadership team, divided into four divisions and 17 operational areas.
The restructuring at YRC companies raises questions and issues for Teamster members, including seniority rights and layoff protections. Mergers or closures of terminals should be subject to change of operations language and enforced under the contract.
