What does the legal mind say?
Babylon Democrats appear to cast early looks at Leg. seat
It
looks like Babylon Democrats are already getting ready to mount a major
offensive to take back the 14th district legislative seat that
Republican Legis. Kevin McCaffrey of Lindenhurst won in a major upset
last year.
Bellone aide Tim Sini, 34, a former assistant U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, is also knocking on doors and handing out palm cards on weekends as an unpaid “special assistant” to Babylon Supervisor Richard Schaffer, to help local residents with any town problems. Sini, a $110,273 a year assistant principal county attorney, is not an announced candidate, but has been walking the district since August, shortly after he was hired by the county.
Schaffer, also Suffolk Democratic chairman, declined to say whether Sini, a Babylon village resident, being considered as a candidate, saying only, “Tim is doing a terrific job bringing town government closer to residents.”
McCaffrey said he just found out about Sini’s below-the-radar efforts, but added the Democrats’ intent is clear. “I’m just focused on my district and I don’t care who they put up against me,” said McCaffrey, who is also Teamster Local 707 president. “I like my chances...and I think I’m in a better place now than when I won the seat after 27 years of Democratic control.”

Stop scratching on holidays

Off Track Betting in New York State has been racing into a crisis called shrinking revenue. Some people have spitballed a solution: Don’t close on holidays.
New York State Racing Law bars racing on Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday, and the state has ruled OTBs can’t handle action on those days, even though they could easily broadcast races from out of state.
“You should be able to bet whenever you want,” said Jackson Leeds, a Nassau OTB employee who makes an occasional bet. He added some irrefutable logic: “How is the business going to make money if you’re not open to take people’s bets?”
Elias Tsekerides, president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, said OTB is open on Greek Orthodox Easter and Palm Sunday.
“I don’t want discrimination,” Tsekerides said. “They close for the Catholics, but open for the Greek Orthodox? It’s either open for all or not open.”
OTB officials have said they lose millions by closing on Palm Sunday alone, with tracks such as Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Turf Paradise and Hawthorne running.
One option: OTBs could just stay open and face the consequences. New York City OTB did just that back in 2003. The handle was about $1.5 million – and OTB was fined $5,000.
Easy money.
