Suffolk: Legis. McCaffrey chosen as GOP minority leader
John Jay LaValle, Suffolk GOP leader, said McCaffrey, a Teamsters union leader, was the unanimous pick to replace Legis. John Kennedy, the Suffolk comptroller-elect. McCaffrey last year took an open legislative seat in Democratic County Executive Steve Bellone's home district.
McCaffrey, 60, of Lindenhurst, said he wants to build on GOP victories last month and “draw the distinction between ourselves and the Democrats."
He also said he plans to refer to himself as the Republican leader rather than the minority leader to set a new tone. While a freshman lawmaker, McCaffrey also said, "I have 23 years experience in local government and have been around the block before." Before winning his legislative seat, he was a Lindenhurst trustee for 23 years, 10 of them as deputy mayor.
