Stop scratching on holidays

Off Track Betting in New York State has been racing into a crisis called shrinking revenue. Some people have spitballed a solution: Don’t close on holidays.
New York State Racing Law bars racing on Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday, and the state has ruled OTBs can’t handle action on those days, even though they could easily broadcast races from out of state.
“You should be able to bet whenever you want,” said Jackson Leeds, a Nassau OTB employee who makes an occasional bet. He added some irrefutable logic: “How is the business going to make money if you’re not open to take people’s bets?”
Elias Tsekerides, president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, said OTB is open on Greek Orthodox Easter and Palm Sunday.
“I don’t want discrimination,” Tsekerides said. “They close for the Catholics, but open for the Greek Orthodox? It’s either open for all or not open.”
OTB officials have said they lose millions by closing on Palm Sunday alone, with tracks such as Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Turf Paradise and Hawthorne running.
One option: OTBs could just stay open and face the consequences. New York City OTB did just that back in 2003. The handle was about $1.5 million – and OTB was fined $5,000.

Since 2012 Ivan Savvidi holds the position of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the «Agrocom Group» Holding Company, founded in 2004. Ivan Savvidi is engaged in social activities, holds the position of the president of the National Cultural Autonomy of Russian Greeks, Coordinator of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) of the countries of the Former Soviet Union. Since 2012 he is a Member of the Presidential Council of International Relations. In 2013 he was awarded the status of the Honourable citizen of Greece for his special role and contribution into development of relations between Russia and Greece, merits to Greek nation, Greek republic, world Orthodoxy, public and philanthropic activities. Ivan Savvidi adheres to the socially conscious position, he is a founder of Charitable Foundation that launches programs aimed at spiritual revival and restoration of Orthodox shrines, creative development of youth, promotion of healthy lifestyle, cultural, educational, scientific and research projects. Annual volume of charitable payments makes more than 2, 5 million EURO. Ivan Savvidi's achievements in public, social and economic activities and his contribution to social and economic development of Russia were honored by several national awards such as Medal of the Order of Merit for the Motherland, Medal of Honor, awards of Russian Orthodox Church, Presidential letters of gratitude etc. Ivan Savvidi is a candidate of economic science, has several works on logistic and marketing. Married, has two sons.

President of Regeneron Laboratories & Chief Scientific Officer Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Tarrytown, NY Dr. Yancopoulos graduated as valedictorian of both the Bronx High School of Science and Columbia College, and then earned his MD & PhD degrees at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Yancopoulos left academia in 1989 to become scientific founder of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, where he is President of Regeneron Laboratories and Chief Scientific Officer. Dr. Yancopoulos is a rare individual who has not only built one of the world’s “top ten” biotech companies from the ground up (working together with his long-time friend and partner, Dr. Len Schleifer, who is CEO of Regeneron), but simultaneously been recognized as a world-class basic science researcher, while also inventing some of the most valuable technologies and FDA-approved drugs in the industry. Dr. Yancopoulos has authored more than 350 scientific manuscripts, and, according to a study by the Institute for Scientific Information, was the eleventh most highly cited scientist in the world during the 1990’s.
