As Fellow Candidates Mock Romney’s Offer to Bet, Gingrich Holds His Fire

AMES, Iowa — Mitt Romney became the target of mocking criticism on Sunday from several of his Republican presidential rivals — except Newt Gingrich, whose silence underscored his growing confidence as the party’s nominating contest enters a critical week featuring the final televised debate of the year.

“Having an extra $10,000 that you would throw down on a bet just seems very out of the ordinary,” Mr. Perry said in a brief interview as he passed through a coffee shop here. He smiled, adding, “I would suggest to you that $10,000 is pocket change for Mitt.”
Former Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr. of Utah, who did not meet requirements to participate in the debate because of his low poll numbers, sought to keep the exchange alive by suggesting that he would accept Mr. Romney’s bet. The Democrats joined in the criticism, too, piecing together a Web video of the unflattering commentary about Mr. Romney at the debate on Saturday.
The remark from Mr. Romney not only drew attention to his wealth, but also highlighted how he had grown defensive three weeks before the Republican voting begins at the Iowa caucuses. He sought to brush aside questions about the $10,000 wager, but noted that his wife, Ann, told him after the debate, “A lot of things you do well; betting isn’t one of them.”
The Republican presidential candidates fanned out across Iowa, New Hampshire and the television talk shows on Sunday, trying to deliver their arguments to voters as time runs short. There may be 23 days before the Iowa caucuses, but campaign strategists believe the next two weeks could be a pivotal time to make headway before voters tune out for the holidays.
Mr. Gingrich, who is a regular guest of Sunday morning programs, declined invitations to appear the day after he emerged relatively unscathed from withering attacks in the debate. He did not add his voice to the dust-up surrounding Mr. Romney, a sign that he viewed his current position as strong and saw no reason to engage his leading rival.
As he works to build an organization in Iowa and New Hampshire, where he is playing catch-up with most of his rivals, Mr. Gingrich is also looking ahead to other primary states. On Sunday, his campaign announced the hiring of a state director in Florida, Jose Mallea, who helped Senator Marco Rubio win election there last year.
When Mr. Romney arrived in New Hampshire to deliver an afternoon speech, he struck a subdued tone. Asked by reporters why Mr. Gingrich seemed to be doing well, he suggested that his rise might be only temporary and included Mr. Gingrich’s name with a string of Republicans whose stars have risen and later fallen, like Herman Cain and Donald Trump.
“I think people are taking a very careful look, because we are very, very committed as a conservative group of voters, that we want someone we can nominate who will both beat Barack Obama and fix the country,” Mr. Romney said. He added, “Sometimes they like what they see; sometimes after they’ve examined it for a while the numbers come down a bit.”
But advisers to Mr. Romney are taking Mr. Gingrich seriously and trying to determine how to raise questions about his candidacy that may resonate in the minds of voters. The Romney campaign unleashed a forceful barrage of attacks last week, and aides said a similar pattern was expected in the coming days.
New television advertisements against Mr. Gingrich are ready to be broadcast this week by the Romney campaign. But aides said they were weighing how aggressively to go after Mr. Gingrich. The campaign is also taking steps to urge Republican leaders to keep raising doubts about Mr. Gingrich, a former House speaker.
The strategy is complicated by the fact that the rest of the Republican candidates are also sharpening their distinctions with Mr. Romney and Mr. Gingrich in an effort to raise doubts about both men in the eyes of conservative voters.
Representative Ron Paul of Texas, who has a strong organization and a loyal following in Iowa, said Sunday that there was little difference between Mr. Romney and Mr. Gingrich.
“I think they come from the same mold,” Mr. Paul said in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “They’re both on the defensive. They’re both explaining themselves.”
Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said Sunday that “there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the two of them.” In an appearance on CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” she repeated a phrase she coined at the debate, “Newt Romney,” and urged voters to study the health care records of the men, noting that both “have advocated for a health care mandate.”
PUBLIC COMMENT/PETITION DECEMBER 21st MEETING OF THE NEW YORK RACING AND WAGERING BOARD
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. A premeditated, willful, vicious and/or malicious failure by Governor Andrew Cuomo, the New York Racing and Wagering Board, OTB Presidents and elected and appointed officials of the State of New York to ask the New York State Attorney General for a FREE FORMAL OR INFORMAL OPINION is worse than ignorance of the law.

I again ask the New York Racing and Wagering Board to ask the Attorney General for a FORMAL OPINION regarding NY PML Sec 105.
1. NY PML Sec 105 does not apply to the OTBs.
2. NY PML Sec 105 is not constitutionally defensible.
3. NY PML Sec 105 violates the rights of New York State Bettors secured by NYConst. Art. 1, Sec. 3.
4. NY PML Sec 105 is vague, indefinite and/or overly broad. The Gregorian and Julian Calendars define different Sundays to be "Easter Sunday" in 2012 and in other years.
I have asked Lindenhurst Deputy Mayor and Trustee Kevin McCaffrey via email villageboard@villageoflindenhurst.com to ask Attorney General Eric Schneiderman for an Opinion. Kevin McCaffrey is also President of Teamsters Local 707 which merged with Teamsters Local 858 without providing Local 858 Members with a a copy of the Merger Agreement and related documents. Teamsters Local 858 represented the Managers of New York City OTB and employees of Nassau OTB. Upon the merger of Local 858 and Local 707 former Local 858 President Barry Yomtov became a "Business Agent" for Teamsters Local 707. Unlike Kevin McCaffrey, Barry Yomtov has no standing to ask the Attorney General for an Opinion. Nassau OTB has considerable outstanding liabilitie. See eg.

Dear Deputy Mayor and Village Trustee Kevin McCaffrey:
Please immediately ask Attorney General for an OPINION to resolve the following questions first raised by the Counsel for New York City OTB:
1. NY PML Sec 105 does not apply to the OTBs.
2. NY PML Sec 105 is not constitutionally defensible.
3. NY PML Sec 105 violates the rights of the bettors of Lindenhurst and the State of New York secured by NYConst. Art. 1, Sec. 3.
4. NY PML Sec 105 is vague, indefinite and/or overly broad. The Gregorian and Julian Calendars define different Sundays to be "Easter Sunday" in 2012 and in other years.
As you know Barry Yomtov and New York City OTB employees were paid double time for working on any Sunday.
Nassau OTB employees are paid time and a half for working on any Sunday.
New York City OTb has died in bankruptcy and Suffolk OTB has filed for and been denied bankruptcy.
Barry Yomtov was unable to obtain an Attorney General Opinion when he was President of Teamsters Local 858 because he had no standing to ask for one.
People should be free to work or not as they wish while they still have jobs. The OTBs are public benefit corporations and the fiscal condition of the State and its subdivisions is apparently "functionally bankrupt."
Your prompt attention to this matter is appreciated.
Sincerely yours,
Nassau OTB Cashier
