Dear Fellow New Yorker, Texting-while-driving death statistics are frightening – more than 3,000 deaths last year were attributed to distracted driving. Governor Cuomo is working to make New York’s roads safer; last July, he signed a new law to make texting while driving a primary traffic offense. Law enforcement now has the power to stop motorists solely for using a handheld electronic device. The Governor announced this week that during the first months of 2012, more than 65,000 motorists were ticketed for using an electronic device while driving. This week, Governor Cuomo launched a second Operation Hang Up campaign to further the efforts to reduce distracted driving. Join Governor Cuomo’s fight to keep New York’s roads safe: don’t text and drive. Click here to learn more about the Operation Hang Up enhanced enforcement campaign. With the enactment of new texting laws, and increased enforcement efforts like Operation Hang Up, the Governor and state law enforcement are taking major steps to prevent the tragic consequences of distracted driving. Help us change this dangerous behavior by reminding your friends and family to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Together, let’s help keep New Yorkers safe. Thank you, The Office of the Governor | |
